Notes From Home 08/06/09
Sowed 16 seeds of gourd 'Jack O Lantern' into eight 7cm plastic pots (2 per). A late sowing, but as the packet instructions says it's still possible (just) and as I've not much else to go in this year, I thought to give them a go.

Fascinating Fasciation
Fasciation is a condition of plant growth in which the apical meristem, normally concentrated around a single point, producing approximately cylindrical tissue, becomes elongated perpendicularly to the direction of growth, producing flattened, ribbon-like, crested, or elaborately contorted tissue. The phenomenon may occur in the stem, root, fruit, or flower head.
Here it's with the flower-stalks of the poached egg plants. I'm a little dismayed when reading on to discover that it can be caused by chemical damage (goodness knows what my predecessors may have put on the plot).
Principle tasks: Digging two more 'Maris Bard' potatoes. Watering next in line. Watering newly-sown phacelia (and frowning over how over-thickly I had sown the previous patch).
